Places to Eat

An excellent website that will give you a great review of good places to eat in Amsterdam is Iens. Iens is an independent organization that rates restaurants throughout the Netherlands. The site is mostly in Dutch, but you can find the ratings and price for a three course meal fairly easily.

The areas to look are the area Artis, where the university and conference venue are located. Choose the Dam for something near the central train station. Nieuwmarkt, Rembrandplein or Leidseplein are areas near public transportation and with busy squares with lots of bars restaurants and outdoor seating. The Jordaan is the canal district with more hip and/or upscale restaurants.

Right opposite the conference venue you will find eating cafe De Roeter. Not the most fancy place to eat, but if you're looking for good food at a reasonable price and a nice atmosphere, this is the place to be.

When you exit the conference venue through the main entrance, turn right and continue down the road for 5 minutes until you cross the Plantage Middenlaan, you will come across Cafe Koosje at number 37. An excellent choice is you're looking for a little more options than De Roeter provides. Special season courses, vegetarian dishes and an excellent housewine are provided here. This is also a good place to lunch.

If you prefer oriental food, you can visit the Indonesian restaurant Taman Sari at the Plantage Kerklaan 32, the Chinese restaurant New Happy Corner at Plantage Kerklaan 30 or the Japanese restaurant Tempura at Plantage Kerklaan 26, all about a 5 minute walk to the right from the conference venue main entrance.
