Announcement: Postdoctoral Research Fellow

The Institute for Choice, located in Sydney, Australia, is seeking applicants for a postdoctoral position in the area of choice modelling. The particular research stream motivating this position aims to develop and test new behavioral and econometric models of choice based on the assumption that individuals adopt “how to decide” (or antecedent volition) strategies when choosing between alternatives. The position is funded by an Australian Research Council Discovery grant to Joffre Swait and A. Marley. Start date is July 2014 or negotiable.

The successful candidate will have completed a PhD in engineering, economics or psychology (other disciplines may be considered) before commencing. Applicants must be committed to applying rigorous mathematical tools to modeling human decision making. Additionally:

·        Strong academic career orientation.

·        Applied mathematics background, including nonlinear optimization theory.

·        Good econometric and/or statistical skills presumed.

·        Demonstrable personal initiative and capability to be self-motivated.

·        Experience/interest in carrying out human behavioral experiments is desirable, though not required.

·        Programming skills, particularly in the implementation of mathematical and computational models, and in classical and/or Bayesian statistical methods in R, Gauss, Matlab, etc. SAS or SPSS would be an advantage.

To help candidates assess their suitability for the position prior to submitting an application, note that the core developments proposed in the grant will be based on the endogenous Maximum Entropy Program (eMEP) approach to choice model formulation (see Swait and Marley 2013, Journal of Mathematical Psychology 57:1-13).
